Terracing is commonplace in Mediterranean gardens. I allows the plants and trees
good drainage and prevents the soil from being washed away. It also gives the designer the ability to do something
different on each level, with emphasis on the garden on one level and a patio on another, and so on. The trees from
upper levels can shade the lower levels, while the flowers on the upper levels may be at waist high or eye level.
This gives visitors the chance to view them closely without having to get down or get into the garden. There are
many scents in the Tuscan garden that in the warm summer will rise and permeate the air. The native wild life will
surely enjoy this garden as much as the humans!
